Scams Targeting Businesses
The Montana Department of Revenue continues to see identity thieves targeting not only individuals, but also tax preparers and employers. Identity thieves are constantly changing the types of attacks and what they are trying to access, not just stealing personal information, but also obtaining full client returns to file fraudulent submissions before the legitimate filer can.
Common Scam Tactics
- Phishing emails or texts (smishing) attempting to trick the recipient into clicking suspicious links, providing personal information, or downloading a malware file,
- Spear or clone phishing, where fraudsters tailor messages to the individual or replicate legitimate emails.
- Fraudsters posing as new clients to tax preparers in an attempt to send malicious attachments or links designed to steal information or install malware.
- Phone calls, text messages, fake correspondence, and misleading social media activity used to gain access to client data.
- Social media posts spreading incorrect or misleading information about filing requirements.
Warning Signs that Taxpayer Data May Have Been Compromised
- Department correspondence received despite no return being filed, including identity verification letters, adjustment notices, or balance due statements.
- Refunds issued even though the taxpayer did not file a return.
- Rejection or submission confirmation emails received without a filed return.
- Calls from the department requesting verification of a filing or return information.
